Hom Chi Organic Leisure Farm, located within the Gaoshu water protection area at the foot of Dawu Mountain, produces mainly organic pineapples, bananas, papayas, and duck-farming rice. Its agricultural products have been well acknowledged and granted organic certification. Teacher Hsu started to study organic products over ten years ago and has been to the United States to participate in organic farming activities. Afterward, he enthusiastically developed a field in Gaoshu and expanded the organic farm as a travel resort. For many years, Hsu has been dedicating himself to the philosophy of “Wholesome diet and Hopeful life (吃出健康，活出希望).” Combining traditional Hakka brewing methods and the latest biotechnologies, Hsu has succeeded in growing nutritious, organic pineapples and fine-quality pineapple enzyme.
Rice-duck farming, a low-cost, yet challenging organic farming method, is another success that Hsu achieved through years of trial and error. Without applying chemical fertilizers or pesticides, Hsu raises ducklings on the rice paddies. While ducks are foraging, they remove weeds, eat unwanted pests, and soften the soil with their bill and feet movements. Their droppings also provide natural fertilizer. It is an eco-friendly way to revive rice fields, and Hsu eventually harvests premium quality rice.
With insight and persistence, and a wish to learn from nature, Hsu has made himself a legend and witnessed the restoration of his beloved land. |
