A Canadian born Kiwi, living a life of creation with his lovely Taiwanese wife, has built an eco-friendly English teaching school and leisure farm out of recycled materials (newspaper, wood, glass etc) in Ligang Township ,Pingtung County.
Surrounded by Jasmine flowers, the farm was named DaMorLee, meaning “big jasmine” in Chinese. It is set in lush, green surroundings with a bridge over a stream, a pavilion, and a pond for ducks and thousands of fish. John Lamorie, a former building inspector turned English teacher, and his wife Shelly Wu, have put thousands of hours of their own labor into this dream land. They have built a 75 square-meter school house consisting of a classroom and living areas. They have also built a tea house equipped with a wood fired oven in the kitchen. All have been made with ‘papercrete’.
Papercrete is prepared by putting recycled wastepaper, water and cement into a large-scale blender that John devised. He then molds it into bricks for building walls and coats the finished walls with silicon paint to make sure they can withstand rain. John’s hard effort has proved not in vain. The buildings they built out of paper have survived several devastating typhoons since their completion. |
