DaMorLee Eco-friendly Leisure Farm 大茉莉農莊 Main Products│Q&A

A Canadian born Kiwi, living a life of creation with his lovely Taiwanese wife, has built an eco-friendly English teaching school and leisure farm out of recycled materials (newspaper, wood, glass etc) in Ligang Township ,Pingtung County.

Surrounded by Jasmine flowers, the farm was named DaMorLee, meaning “big jasmine” in Chinese. It is set in lush, green surroundings with a bridge over a stream, a pavilion, and a pond for ducks and thousands of fish. John Lamorie, a former building inspector turned English teacher, and his wife Shelly Wu, have put thousands of hours of their own labor into this dream land. They have built a 75 square-meter school house consisting of a classroom and living areas. They have also built a tea house equipped with a wood fired oven in the kitchen. All have been made with ‘papercrete’.

Papercrete is prepared by putting recycled wastepaper, water and cement into a large-scale blender that John devised. He then molds it into bricks for building walls and coats the finished walls with silicon paint to make sure they can withstand rain. John’s hard effort has proved not in vain. The buildings they built out of paper have survived several devastating typhoons since their completion.

John sees no limit to what can be recycled as building materials. Aside from its papercrete walls, the studio/classroom uses recycled steel beams, wooden doors and window frames taken from several demolished houses near by. With his tea house, he experimented with antique glass sake and soy sauce bottles. He also used beer bottles, railway sleepers, and the timber from classroom chalkboards. “The only boundary is your imagination,” John says.

John and Shelly are extending their creativity to restaurant management and pizza making. Adhering to the concept of natural and freshness, their tea house offers naturally leavened pizza and bread, baked in a wood fired oven. Besides seasonal fruits and vegetables grown in their garden, a wide variety of herbs also add flavor to dishes and beverages. A getaway from the hustle and bustle of the city life, DaMorLee provides its visitors not only a fantastic place to appreciate the poetic rural environment but also hands-on opportunities to experience the life of eco-living.
