Aren’t you afraid that ducks will destroy rice seedlings by eating
and even treading on them?
Of course it’s a challenge and that’s why the duration of ducks’
stay in the paddy fields, the size of the ducks, and the growth
time of the seedlings have to be controlled.
First, the workload of a duck is limited. For a farm as large as 0.1
hectare, the farmer needs 15-20 ducks to get rid of weeds and
pests efficiently. As soon as transplanting the rice seedlings,
newly-hatched ducks are bought.
After raising the ducks for 12-13 days, they are put in the farms
and allowed to familiarize themselves with the environment.
Ducks will “work” based on their habits: walking and eating in the
farm during the daytime and resting after dark.
About 80 days after transplanting rice seedlings, when the ear of
the rice is growing, the ducks are brought back to the pond and
raised there. The ducks are forced to retire and cannot work in
the farm anymore.
